Step 1: Break down the question like a marker would
Before you put pen to paper, analyse the command terms in the question. VCAA doesn’t give directions like ‘explain’ or ‘evaluate’ randomly. Each one comes with very specific expectations:
- List = Just name things – no explanations needed! : )
- Outline = Brief descriptions. Stick to breadth, not depth.
- Explain = Cause-effect reasoning. You need to go beyond stating facts – make connections.
- Compare/Contrast = Point out both similarities and differences.
- Evaluate = Weigh up strengths and weaknesses. Include pros, cons, and a judgment.
Pro tip: For longer SAQs worth 4+ marks, many students lose marks not because they don’t know the content, but because they don’t know how to structure their answer to match what the question actually asks.
Step 2: Dot points are a student’s best friend
Unless it’s a one-sentence 1-marker, every short answer is ideally written in dot points – No exceptions.
Why?
- It forces structure. You’ll naturally separate each key idea.
- It aligns with the marking scheme (usually 1 mark per distinct idea).
- It’s easier for examiners to read and award marks (seriously, help them help you!)
- It saves time compared to writing full sentences, plain and simple. Chemistry assessments are fast-paced!
Let’s say you’re answering a 4-marker on equilibrium shifts. Your mindset should be:
‘Okay, I need four distinct, correct, keyword-loaded points. Let me list them out clearly.’
Here’s what that might look like (sample answer):
• Increase in pressure will shift the equilibrium to the side with fewer gas molecules
• By Le Châtelier’s Principle, the system will partially oppose the change
• This results in a net forward reaction
• Equilibrium yield of ammonia increases
Pro tip: Even if you’re confident, never write in paragraphs for 3+ mark questions. You’ll almost always miss a discrete marking point or two – and there goes your perfect score.
Step 3: Screen your answer for keywords
Before you move on to the next question, build a 15-second habit: scan each dot point for keywords relevant to that topic.

Because examiners are trained to look for specific words. No keyword = no mark. Even if your explanation is technically right.

For example:
Q: What is the effect of increased temperature on an exothermic reaction at equilibrium?
You can follow this 3-step logic flow:
• Exothermic reaction releases heat, so increasing temperature adds heat
• By Le Châtelier’s principle, system will partially oppose this by favouring the endothermic (reverse) reaction
• Therefore, equilibrium shifts left, and yield of products decreases
