VCE Maths Methods probability questions can seem like free marks – after all, it’s your CAS doing all the heavy lifting… right?
Not quite.
Despite that tech support, probability is one of the highest mistake-rate topics in the course. Not because the maths is hard – it’s because the questions are subtle. A missed word or symbol, and suddenly you’re down a few marks. But don’t worry. In this blog, we unpack the top 3 mistakes VCE students make across all areas of probability – and how to eliminate them.

Mistake 1: Ignoring verbal cues in the question
Many probability questions include small phrases that tell you exactly what type of approach or formula to use. But they don’t always spell it out. You have to learn how to read for the hints.
Here are some common ones:
- ‘Given that…’ → This is almost always a conditional probability question
- ‘Each trial is independent…’ or ‘fixed number of trials…’ → These are key signs of a binomial distribution
- ‘Normally distributed with mean μ and standard deviation σ’ → You can go straight to your normal distribution formulas
- ‘More than’, ‘At most’, ‘At least’ → These help you define inequalities correctly (more on this below!)
Pro tip: Start building a trigger phrase bank – a mental checklist of language cues that instantly connect to specific formulas or distributions.
Mistake 2: Skipping the setup for your variables
You open the question, spot numbers and the words ‘binomial’ or ‘normally distributed.’ You plug them straight into your CAS – big mistake.
Don’t calculate before you define.
This is the step that top students do automatically – and everyone else skips in a rush.
Why defining matters:
Before you touch your calculator, write down the key parameters of your distribution X (or whatever letter has been used):
- Binomial Distribution: X~B(n, p)
- n=number of trials
- p=probability of success on each trial
- n=number of trials
- Normal Distribution: X~N(μ, σ)
- μ=mean
- σ=standard deviation
- μ=mean
For example:
‘A machine produces items with a 2% defect rate. Out of 100 items, what is the probability that exactly 5 are defective?’
Your first reaction should be to write: X~B(100, 0.02)
Not: ‘Hmm… I guess I’ll just plug in 5, 100 and 0.02 somewhere and see what happens.’
Pro tip: Often, these values are right at the top of the question, in the stimulus. Identify them before the working begins. It saves time, boosts accuracy, and the definition step can often earn you one method mark.
Mistake 3: Messing up inequalities (especially in discrete probability!)
Let’s say the question asks:
‘What is the probability that more than 5 customers arrive in an hour?;
Do you find P(X>5), or P(X≥6)? Does it even matter? Hint: Yes – it matters a LOT.
Follow this rule of thumb:
Discrete probability (eg. binomial distribution):
- Inequality signs matter. You have to adjust the numbers to the actual situation.
- P(X>5) → Means P(X≥6)
- P(X<5) → Means P(X≤4)
Continuous probability (eg. normal distribution):
- Inequality signs don’t change the outcome.
- P(X>5) = P(X≥5)
- P(X<7) = P(X≤7)
- P(X>5) = P(X≥5)
But why, though?
In continuous distributions, the probability of any exact value eg. P(X=5) is literally zero. So including or excluding the endpoint doesn’t affect the total probability.
But in discrete cases – like when you’re counting people, coins, or attempts – those exact values have non-zero probabilities, and the difference does matter.
Pro tip: When you see words like:
- ‘More than’ → Think ‘>’
- ‘At least’ → Think ‘≥’
- ‘Fewer than’ → Think ‘<’
- ‘At most’ → Think ‘≤’
And adjust accordingly based on the type of distribution you’re working with.

Before you finish any Methods probability question, run through this mental checklist:
- Verbal cues
Have you identified the type of probability distribution and formulas needed?
- Define your distribution
Did you write down your n, p or μ, σ values for easy referencing before jumping onto the CAS?
- Think twice about the inequality in this situation
Are you adjusting the endpoints correctly for discrete vs continuous distributions?
Don’t leave your scores in Probability up to chance
The common denominator in all these mistakes?
Rushing. Guessing. Not reading carefully. Not structuring your thoughts.
The fix is simple enough – you just need to slow down. With a few small habit changes, you’ll start to feel way more in control of probability questions.
