Your highlighter is for precision. Use it to actively mark keywords in the question stem – units, conditions, constraints, and especially domain restrictions.

For example, if a question limits the function to a particular interval, and you miss it? That’s an automatic deduction.

Vanguard students are taught to highlight domain restrictions, conditions like “to 2 decimal places,” and anything that affects how you approach the question. Train your brain to see what most students skip.

2. Keep a Personal Silly Mistake Log

This one’s simple – and seriously effective.

Start a running list of your past mistakes. Every time you miss a mark due to a careless error, add it to your log.

It might include things like:

• Forgetting the 1/(b–a) in the average value formula
• Reversing transformations in function questions
• Overlooking asymptotes or intercepts
• Mixing up radians and degrees

Keep this list in your bound reference. Scan it before every SAC or exam to remind yourself of your personal blind spots.

The difference between a good score and a top one? Checking.

The best students allocate 10–20 minutes at the end of every test just to review. And not just a skim, they actively redo key questions, sub answers back into equations, and check logic across multi-mark sections.

Here are three ways to check:

• Re-solve the problem using a different method (if time allows)
• Sub your solution back in to verify it fits
• Use your CAS to validate algebra-heavy work

4. Let Your CAS Calculator Carry More Weight

In tech-active assessments, your CAS is your best friend. Don’t waste mental energy on manual algebra when the calculator can do it faster and more reliably.

Even if it’s something simple like 1 + 2… do it on the CAS.

You’d be shocked how many people lose marks to double negatives or incorrect transcribing under pressure. The calculator doesn’t get nervous. You do.

Use the CAS to:

• Run equations
• Simplify algebra
• Confirm values before writing them down

Then just transcribe your working from CAS to paper. Cleaner. Faster. Safer.

5. Build Accuracy Into Your Practice
